Together they have moved house almost twenty times and have owned a holiday home in Portugal for almost a quarter of a century. Ronald and Bartina Koeman have been happily married for years.
In the past years their relationship was thoroughly tested. The blonde was diagnosed with breast cancer. The way in which Ronald took care of his wife was heart-warming: ,,I was always occupied with football. When you came home your meal was ready. Our household and everything involved was always running smoothly. I never had to worry about it. One good thing from this is that I’m now quite capable of dishing up a decent meal in the kitchen. Moments when she was too ill to get out of bed there was nobody else but me to take care of this. At first this was hard but it became easier with time.”
Bartina managed to beat cancer and could start a cosmetics shop in Oosterbeek with her daughter Debbie. ,,I used to be a very resolute woman. I always thought I had everything under control”, she tells De Telegraaf. “But because of my illness I realised this is not the case. You consciously have to take pleasure from everything happening to you. I haven’t worked for twenty-five years. This feels so right. For a year we had all sorts of classes and now we’re ready for it. I think you’ll find me here a lot. Maybe I’ll take Sundays off to give some attention to my footballer-husband.”
Daughter Debbie on her parents: ,,Mama wanted to take a step in a new direction back in 2010 when she turned fifty. But then her illness interfered. I think beating it gave her even more energy.”
One can hardly say Bartina Koeman lacks vivacity. On 25 November 2013 she let herself go Twitter, after fan site FR12 wrote a critical article about her husband, who was coach of Feyenoord at the time. ,,It’s never good enough!!! First my husband is too firm – and now they are telling him he has to take a baton through the dressing room!!”, the wife twittered angrily.
Ronald Koeman and his wife Bartina are together in the media on a regular basis. For instance they said in an interview with Woonstijl that Buddha-statuettes are their favourite objects in their house in Bussum. By the way, they have three children together: Ronald Koeman junior (goalkeeper with Almere City), Tim and Debby.
