Dries Mertens has been together with his high school sweetheart Katrin Kerkhofs for quite a while now. The Napoli-player is very proud of his blonde.
The football player and his Flemish beauty got married after having been in a steady relationship for ten years. In Leuven they paid fitting homage to Jos ‘Jokke’ Kerkhofs, Katrin’s dad who had passed away suddenly at age 48, on Christmas Eve 2004. A nameplate was attached to the bench at the Grote Markt. After their wedding the couple went to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. There, where they could be all alone, Katrin’s more sensual and naughty sides emerged. She took off her bikini top for a topless sunbathing session. Dries Mertens appreciated this and took a picture which he contentedly shared with his Instagram followers.
Kerkhofs does not do a lot of interviews, but she did appear once on Copa Ketnet. She also worked as a reporter for a while for Studio Brussel and as a researcher for the Hotel Hungaria production company. When she did speak out, she made a statement against the belittling notion of WAG (Wives and Girlfriends): ,,Of course I am proud to be Dries’ wife. But when journalists start asking me questions I suddenly turn into a platform for my husband. Who cares, that’s my opinion. If somebody wants to know something about you, they wouldn’t ask your wife either? Besides, I am a lot of other things, and the name doesn’t cover those.” She also thinks being a footballer’s wife is much harder than most people think: ,,A lot of people think it’s a simple life. But believe me, it’s not just something any dimwit can do. Moving abroad, always being prepared to leave again if there’s a transfer. Having to build up a new life in a different culture over and over, without family or friends. Your husband is away in the evenings half the time. You don’t want to know how boring our lives can be. On Friday evenings we drink chocolate milk at home, because he has a match on Sundays. You can’t do that if you’re not firmly grounded.”
